Skolevegring eller skolefobi er at eleven ikke klarer å gå på skolen grunnet emosjonelle årsaker, angst mv. selv om eleven ønsker å være på skolen og er motivert til å gjøre skolearbeid. Skolevegring er gjerne et resultat av et vedvarende dårlig psykososialt skolemiljø.
Det er viktig å presisere at skolevegring ikke er skulk, men ufrivillig skolefravær.
Det finnes flere definisjoner på skolevegring. I Store norske leksikon står det:
En mye brukt definisjon på skolevegring er dersom barnet eller ungdommen har vært borte mer enn 25 prosent av skoletiden de siste to ukene, og/eller opplevd alvorlige vansker med å gå på skolen i minst to uker i en slik grad at vegringen har påvirket barnets eller familiens hverdag i stor grad, og/eller hatt mer enn 10 dager eller 15 prosent fravær over de siste 15 ukene. Fraværet skal som regel også knyttes til at barnet/ungdommen rapporterer negative følelser overfor det å gå på skolen.
Store norske leksikon
Skolevegring er ikke et problem hos eleven, men et klart symptom på at det er problemer fra skolens side.
Skolevegring vil i en del tilfeller gi angstsymptomer eller klinisk angst.
